George Genealogy: Family Groups

Shannon & Texas Counties, MO

These George family groups are of UK origin. I have no information on George families outside the states of NC, TN, IL and MO. This page is less tentative now that I have heard from cousins in Missouri: Jacklin Brown of Kansas City sent copies of a George family Bible to supplement what I learned from Maudelean George of Eminence, Shannon Co. I have made many corrections to this page. The surname Graves is back in my lines from Jacklin's knowledge.

My direct line:

JOHN J. GEORGE + SUSANNAH SAMANTHA CRANE
JOHN J. GEORGE + CASSANDRA "KASSIE" GRAVES
MARY GEORGE + JOHN ALFORD PATTERSON

Related families:

JAMES WATKIN "BUCHANAN" GEORGE + NAOMI "ANNA" DANIELS
OZIAS GEORGE + ELIZABETH ROGERS
WILLIAM LOGAN GEORGE + JulIA AMANDA SUMMERS
BURKE GEORGE + AMANDA ELIZABETH HEINEY
JAMES A. GEORGE + ALICE B. COX

John, age 49, farmer, b NC, with wife Susannah and 4 children.
source: "First Families, Shannon MO" shows the 1850 census listing (I have a copy of the filmed record) but does not show John and Susannah in later years. Perhaps they are recorded in Texas county - they were in the Summersville area.

source: Cathy Patterson says the family came to Shannon Co Missouri before 1840 and were among the first settlers of the Summersville area, and that John died abt 1866 of Civil War wounds. He would have been 59: what wounds? bushwhackers?
source: Maudelean George straightened out their names, dates and children, and confirmed that Jas and John, my ancestor, were brothers.

Notes

Husband: John J. George
source: Wm Vaughn's notes from Myrtle Trusty and Cassie Shineman say John J was b in Effingham on the road to MO. Fits my not finding our Georges in IL land records or the censuses.
source: 1850 census, Shannon MO, age 15 b IL
source: 1860 census Shannon MO, age 26 b IL, married to Sarah with 2 kids as here
source: 1870 census, not found in Shannon Co - check Texas Co MO.
source: Noel George's family Bible notes supplied by Jacklin Brown
shows that the children were raised by John's sister Marada and her husband Claforn Burk Berry Daniels. Mollie Patton and Jim George were also raised by this couple.
Don't know what became of John.
Reportedly buried in George Cemetery, Hartshorn, Shannon Co. When??
Wife: Cassandra "Kassie" Graves
Maudelean George had given the name Shineman, but Jacklin Brown showed that was an error in generations and the name is Graves as previously reported.
Jacklin Brown says she died in childbirth 8 Dec 1860.
source: 1860 MO census
Shows a wife "Sarah" with 2 kids as here and Logan is 8 months old.
Confusion! So, did Cassie die in childbirth Dec 1859 and John quickly remarried a Sarah? doesn't seem likely as the kids were raised by his sister and he's not found in 1870. Perhaps Cassie never recovered from childbirth and died in the next year?
Adding to confusion: her mother-in-law is generally reported in cousins' notes as having died the same day. Does anyone know for sure who's who??
Child #1: Mary Delilah George
source: known to living descendants. I have copies of two photos of Mary; the originals belong to James "Pat" and Cathy Patterson of Portland, OR. Had a large goiter in later life. Known for her fine singing voice, which brought many social invitations.
source: MO death certificate #36975.
Informant: John Banks (son-in-law). Cause of death: myocarditis. Contributory factors: gall stones. WT Emdy, MD, Commerce MO; was not attending her; last saw her in Sept. Buried in Summers cemetery, no funeral director. Mary's place of residence was still Round Spring, but place of death indicated is Eminence; is that only the reporting location?
Child #2: William Logan George
Known as Logan. Known to living descendants in Eminence, Shannon MO. This is the only sibling of Mary's that my father knew of (Mary being his paternal grandmother).
source: Cathy Patterson
Known as Logan George. He lived in and around Summersville, MO all his life. He worked as a farmer and mail carrier from Summersville to Hartshorn. A faithful and loyal member of the Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge. Taught poetry to his grandchildren. He was a firm believer in education, and worked to give children in Summersville a good school system.
He and his son-in-law, Lochiel Trusty were among the Board of Trustees at the incorporation of Summersville on Dec. 14, 1913.
source: 1870 census, "Logan" 10 yrs old reported as b MO.
source: Burk George's son says Mary had a brother named Logan; didn't know of any others.
Wm Vaughn's notes have Wm Logan as John J's son and say that John and Cassandra had a dau Mary before Logan was born. That fits other info.
1860 Texas Co MO census
does not show either child in a George family, but now I know they were in a Daniels household.
source: 6 June 1900 MO census Shannon Co Jasper twnshp.
Farmer; rents his farm. Married 13 yrs. He is literate. Says father was b MO, doesn't know where his mother was born. All 5 children b to them living but only 3 here: Myrtle, John Andrew, Cassa A.
