Notes

Husband: Asa Hawkins
source: Will, Scott Co, MO
Seems always to have been known as Asa, but family writeup indicates he was born "Thomas E.". We do not know what the E. would have stood for.
Land patents, Jackson office, signed 20 Jan 1837.

21.85 acres in Scott co, NWNW part of Sec 35 Twnshp 29N range 14E fract/sect Y.
Note that on the same date in the same office, a Rachel Hawkins patented 40 acres in Scott Co, SWNW part of Sec 18 Twnshp 28N range 15E fract/sect N. This is too late to be Asa's first wife. No clue as to who this Rachel is, but Hawkins names are certainly rare there & then.

source: 9 Jun 1870 Scott Co MO census, Commerce township.
"Rody" Hawkins age 62 b TN keeping house; RE $600, PE $400. Thomas age 27 b MO, farm laborer; Clay (would be "Cort") age 24 b MO, farm laborer.

Notes

Husband: THOMAS E. HAWKINS II
source: known through living descendants
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Tom is shown as a farmer, b Jul 1855, so here age 44. His place of birth is reported as TN, but we know the family was in Scott Co MO from the 1820's.
source: Death certificate, file #11214. Died at 5:20 am 4 Mar 1915 in Commerce, Scott Co, from pneumonia, which he'd had for abt 35 days. He was attended by H.T.Blackledge, M.D., from 9 Feb to 3 Mar. Buried 5 Mar 1915, Oakdale Cem, undertaker R.B. H......(I can't read the name.)
source: will filed in Scott Co, MO, transcribed from the clerk's copy, not from Tom's own writing
Why didn't he mention Vergie when he referred to his daughters the second time (in his will)?
The clause restricting property sales during Clara's lifetime is muddled.
Hugh T. Blackledge, one of the executors, was a physician in Commerce.
Child #5: "BERTIE" HAWKINS
source: known to this writer
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Mistakenly noted as a son, with her name given as Alberty, b Jul 1884, then age 15; she was in school that year.
Child #6: "VIRGIE" HAWKINS
source: known through living descendants
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Name given as Virginia M, b Mar 1886, so age 14. She was in school that year.
Child #7: THOMAS E. HAWKINS
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Then age 11, b Dec 1888 it appears (should be 1887), and at school that year.
We don't know what the E. stands for.
source: World War I draft registration, Scott Co, MO
5 Jun 1917, Tom and his brothers registered for the draft in Commerce. Tom's card shows his birthdate, 6 Dec 1887; he reported that he was a self-employed farmer in Scott Co, and single. He claimed exemption from the draft on the grounds that he was raising crops. The registrar, Norval Anderson, noted that Tom was tall, stout, with blue eyes and black hair.
Child #8: WILLIAM FREDERICK HAWKINS
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Here shown as b Sep 1890 and 9 years old. Seems this year's census reporting wasn't done very carefully! In school that year.
source: World War I draft registration, Scott Co, MO
5 Jun 1917, Will registered for the draft in Commerce. The card shows his birthdate, 26 Sep 1889, and that he was tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and medium brown hair.
Will wrote up a family history that was serialized in the local paper.
We have copies of it; it is the source of all our impressions of the family's beginnings in Missouri.
Will was a Baptist.

Child #9: IRTIE MAE HAWKINS
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
In this poorly-reported census year, Irtie is listed as something like `Mardis M', age 7, b Oct 1892 (rather than Nov).
source: gravestones for her and her husband in Oakdale Cemetery
also for a son, Wm R 1925-1946
Child #10: JOSEPH ASA HAWKINS
source: 11 Jun 1900 federal census, Commerce township, Scott Co MO
Here age 5, b Jan 1895, not yet in school.
Joseph's middle name is spelled Ace on his grave marker. He was named after his grandfather Asa, Acie, Ace or Acey Hawkins.
(Re)christened 1954 in Illmo, Scott Co, MO, when Joe converted to the Catholic faith for Ida.
source: World War I draft registration, Scott Co, MO
5 June 1917, Joe registered for the draft in Commerce. The birthdate here (one year later than previously noted) is from that draft registration, as is the spelling of his middle name. He gave his name as Joseph Asa and wrote his signature as Joe Asa. He reported himself at that time as a self-employed farmer and teacher, unmarried. The registrar, Norval F. Anderson, reported that Joe was short, of medium build, blue-eyed, with medium brown hair. Joe was single when he registered, and reported being self-employed as a farmer and a teacher. Unlike Tom, he claimed no grounds for exemption from the draft. Joe served in the Army 1917-1919. (I do not have his record.)
SS# 496-12-9152 seemed the only possible entry in the SSDI. I had had an earlier death date.
